Staff from several Kanata North tech companies revealed their hidden architectural talents this spring at the second annual Community Build Event, in support of the Kanata Food Cupboard.
The fundraiser, which challenges teams to design and build a structure completely out of canned goods, took over the lobby inside 555 Legget Dr., with corporate teams bringing travel-themed food creations to life.
Six teams participated in this year’s competition, including staff from Epiphan Video, Crowe BGK, CAE, Magnet Forensics, Brookstreet, The Marshes and Payment Source.
“We really want people to be creative and have fun with it because this is a really good team-building event,” says Natasha Plotnikov, marketing and client services manager at KRP. “It is a lot of work to design something…source the food and get everyone on the
same page.”
Teams must solicit donations of all the food items they use during the build. This year, some 4,600 pounds of food was collected and then donated to the Kanata Food Cupboard, a local charity that serves families in the area.
“Events like this bring down the walls a little bit, and (give tech workers) the chance to talk to their neighbours,” says Plotnikov. “The fact that we can do that and support a local charity in the process (is) even better.”
