The growing number of businesses in Kanata North has brought with it a growing number of commuters – a facet of working in the technology park that the region’s business leaders are looking to better understand.
Traffic in and around the Kanata North technology park was a major point of discussion during the fall municipal election. Against that backdrop, the KNBA and KRP Properties are conducting a transportation study of commuters to Kanata North.
The study aims to learn how workers in the tech park currently commute and the factors that influence their commuting choices. As well, it explores alternate and sustainable commuting options such as biking and ridesharing to gauge commuters’ interest in exploring other means of transportation.
There are more than 20,000 workers in the tech park, and traffic congestion on March Road and Terry Fox Drive are points of concern for many. On the campaign trail, councillor-elect Jenna Sudds pledged to advocate for light rail transit to Kanata North, an idea that city staff previously dismissed in their proposed routing for a future expansion of Ottawa’s light-rail line.
Sudds also promised to create a committee tasked with reviewing feedback about public transit to and from Kanata North, with the aim of reviewing the feedback and working with OC Transpo to make changes to the current routes.
